Lefdal Mine Datacenter (test) Data Center

This data center, claiming the title of the world's largest, is designed for maximum flexibility and cost-effectiveness, boasting a leading Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). It is strategically positioned to leverage natural cooling resources and offers a high level of security and resilience. The facility is built to be multi-tenant, accommodating diverse customer needs with tailor-made spaces and quick floor space adjustments.

The current structure occupies a 250,000 m² building size, with a substantial 120,000 m² of fully built-out whitespace. The building has a high roof at 19 meters and currently stands at five levels, with future expansion potential to 14 levels. The design features road systems allowing trucks all the way in for logistical ease. Spaces are highly customizable, offering various tenancy types including Full Cabinets, Partial Cabinets, Shared Rackspace, Cages, Suites Footprints, and Remote Hands services. The facility is purpose-built and has expandable whitespace and a Meet-Me-Room (MMR).

The data center achieves a leading TCO partly through its cooling solution, which leverages the proximity to a fjord (536 meters deep) providing a stable supply of seawater at 8 °C. The site also benefits from a year-round stable underground climate. Power is secured with a low price level for energy and a local surplus production of 6.7 TW of renewable energy. The Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is excellent at 1.15. All critical systems—UPS, Cooling, and Standby Power—feature N+1 redundancy. The maximum power per rack is 50 kW.

Security is a unique selling point, featuring high-level security and access control, in-house security personnel (24/7), biometrics, sensors, and constant monitoring. There is a separate personal entrance with a monorail. The facility has natural EMP protection, an extreme low risk of natural disasters, and provides world-leading disaster recovery. It's built for resilience (IBM Tier 3+). Fire suppression includes Automatic Firesuppression, specifically a Water mist fire suppression installation, along with inert gas and oxygen reduction systems. Security is maintained with CCTV surveillance and Card Access Control.

The center is designed as a multi-tenant facility supporting colocation. It features four peering networks and has one tenant offering colocation services. A Meet-Me-Room (MMR) is available for interconnection.

The data center's design adheres to high-level industry standards, specified as Tier 3 Design and Tier 3 Certification (meeting the requested tier level for customers). It is also certified with ISO27001, ISO9001, and ISO14001 standards, demonstrating commitments to security management, quality management, and environmental management, respectively.

The facility is managed by a 24/7/365 Facility Management team and has Onsite Technical Staff (24/7). Beyond the data halls, it includes Office Space for tenants. The facility's strategy is built on cost leadership on space driven by very low construction and overhead costs.
