SMS Datacenter Data Center

The SMS Datacenter in Irvine, California, is a state-of-the-art facility that was fully upgraded in 2009 to meet increasing demand for power and cooling. It is designed to house mission-critical computer systems and meets the highest availability standards. The facility is a SOC2-audited, disaster-safe, steel structure that is fully secure with complete electrical, mechanical, and environmental backup systems.

The purpose-built facility has a total area of 41,000 square feet of fully built-out "whitespace." It offers a range of options for customers, including full cabinets, partial cabinets, shared rackspace, cages, and private suites. The design allows for flexible footprints to accommodate various needs. The datacenter has a manned Network Operations Center (NOC) and technical staff onsite 24/7.

The datacenter has robust and redundant power and cooling systems. It features both internal and external diesel generators, along with three 2N redundant Powerware UPS systems. The facility has over 10,000 gallons of diesel fuel onsite, which can provide over 72 hours of uptime at 100% load. Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) are tested monthly to simulate power loss. Cooling is maintained by over 6.5 million BTUs of air-cooled CRAC units with dedicated roof-mounted condensers, serving a raised floor. Each APC cabinet has redundant three-phase, 208-volt power strips (PDUs). To expand capacity, an additional 2,000 Amps of power can be brought online from a separate dual substation transformer feed, and redundant 270-ton cold-water chillers can be used to augment cooling.

Security is a top priority, with a 24/7 onsite staff and a security system that controls and logs all access. The facility has a mantrap entry, and sensitive areas have limited, automatically logged access. Both the inside and outside of the building are monitored by CCTV surveillance with DVR recording. A uniformed guard is also present after business hours. The datacenter has a comprehensive fire suppression system that includes Vesda, Fike, FM200, and Pre-Action systems.

The facility has a dedicated Meet-Me-Room (MMR) and supports three different network providers to ensure redundant connectivity. Cabinets are equipped with both copper patch panels and fiber optic enclosures, providing a redundant "plug and play" fabric.

The datacenter is SOC 2 Type II certified and meets Tier 3 design standards for high availability. It also complies with HIPAA regulations, ensuring the security and privacy of sensitive data.

The datacenter offers remote hands support for customers. It has a PUE (Power Utilization Efficiency) that is continuously reduced through technology upgrades. The facility was originally operational in 1981 and has been upgraded to maintain modern standards. The building has a secured roof access.
