The USSHC facility was originally built underground by the federal government and a private partner during the Cold War era to ensure continued communications, designed to withstand a megaton class nuclear weapon detonation at a range of two miles. This makes it immune to common disasters. It is impervious to storms, which simply pass over it, and floods, being located on a divide between two watersheds, several hundred feet above the nearest flood plain. While the area is historically unaffected by earthquakes, the building is seismically braced for the worst.The physical structure boasts heavily reinforced walls, ceilings, and outer walls that are two to five feet thick. The facility essentially operates as two data centers under one roof and incorporates multiple levels of onsite power generation and networking capabilities.

The USSHC Data Center achieves near total resilience through extensive redundancy in its core systems. Most of its systems meet or exceed N+2 redundancy. Specifically, it features 2N onsite generation, 3N fuel stores, and 3N cooling. Power is delivered via 2N UPS true dual power paths to each rack, ensuring a reliable and continuous electrical supply. This robust setup is designed with zero common points of failure in mind.

The data center's connectivity is engineered for maximum uptime and security, featuring multiple geographically diverse data connections that result in ZERO common points of failure. The IP connectivity is N+1* redundant, served by two completely diverse tier 1 providers with fiber entering the facility from opposite directions.Unlike many data centers where redundant fibers may converge at a single switching office, USSHC's fibers never meet along their path, reaching truly diverse connection points. Dual IP drops to each rack (2N) are available for tenants. The facility began operational service in 2002.

The USSHC facility provides a range of essential services and features for tenants. The available services include rental of full cabinets, partial cabinets, shared rackspace, cages, and suites, along with hosting of individual servers and Remote Hands service.Standard features include 24/7 access, video surveillance, generators, UPS systems, an alarm system, and air conditioning.
